A leading engineering firm in County Down is seeking to appoint a Transport Manager to oversee and direct its logistics function. This role will focus on managing the movement of vehicles and loads from the company’s Northern Ireland base throughout the UK and Ireland.

The position plays a key role in ensuring smooth day-to-day transport operations and offers a strong opportunity for either an established Transport Manager or a logistics professional ready to progress into a more senior role.

Key Duties:

  • Take ownership of daily transport planning, including scheduling deliveries, trailer movements, and coordinating the return of unaccompanied units.
  • Arrange ferry crossings and manage transport schedules to balance efficiency, cost, and delivery deadlines.
  • Monitor driver working hours, ensuring full compliance with relevant regulations and industry standards.
  • Secure necessary permits for oversized or non-standard loads across both the UK and Ireland.
  • Ensure all loads meet legal weight requirements before dispatch.
  • Oversee vehicle readiness, ensuring maintenance schedules, inspections, and PSV requirements are met.
  • Coordinate breakdown assistance for vehicles operating across the UK.
  • Manage driver rotas, including holiday planning, to maintain consistent service levels.
  • Organise local transport requirements using company vehicles for collections and deliveries.
  • Produce regular cost analysis reports to track spend and identify efficiencies.

Criteria:

  • Strong understanding of transport operations and associated documentation.
  • Familiarity with driver hours legislation and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Highly organised with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Confident communicator with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-moving environment.
  • Full, clean UK driving licence.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Background in vehicle maintenance planning and inspection scheduling.
  • Experience coordinating ferry transport and shipping logistics.
  • Ability to optimise route planning, including backloading and reducing empty mileage.
  • Relevant professional memberships or certifications (e.g. CPC, RHA, Health & Safety qualifications).

Salary:

A competitive salary in the region of £50,000 is available, depending on experience.
